The people and deer populations have been fairly stable in recent years although the forest-to-open land ratios have gone in favor of forests. They are now estimated to cover about 78% of the state. That’s about 24% more forest lands now than there were in 1948. Now there is less open public land and fewer hunters too. Deer populations and how they interact with their surroundings involve a number of variables.
