Should women be given estrogen to control bleeding and spotting?
Norplant implants are estrogen-free and many women and their healthcare providers choose the method for exactly this reason. Research is being conducted to test the effectiveness of a few treatments for bleeding irregularities, but it is still too early to tell whether any will be successful. As of now, the best way to handle irregular bleeding is through sensitive and thorough counseling of women who want the method. Research has shown that women who have been well counseled about what to expect with implants are more likely to find the method acceptable and to continue with it.
