Sierpinski triangle or Sierpinski gasket, is it maths?

The Sierpinski triangle is a geometrical iteration called a fractal. These are mathematically complicated shapes in which each individual segment is a representation of the whole object. The most famous fractals are perhaps the Mandelbrot Set and the Julia Set. You can create your own fractal patterns using open source software called Apophysis. Its fun to use and after a few days you can make some pretty cool stuff even without the mathematical knowledge behind it. (some understanding of basic linear transformations is good) Fractals have only been studied in such a wide sense recently. A lot of university level maths courses have modules on them. I know that the open university has a module about fractals for its Masters Degree in Mathematics. As for practical uses, they are mostly used for graphic design and digital artwork in a wide sense. Beyond that, like most mathematical concepts, they are pretty much useless outside of mathematics.
