Frequent urination (every 20 minutes) often occurs during the early phase of an AF episode and is due to the release of atrial natriuretic peptide from the fibrillating atria. This occurs commonly in lone atrial fibrillation (LAF). In LAF dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system plays a major role. There are two varieties of paroxysmal LAF, an adrenergic form and vagal form. Adrenergic type LAF (Episodes occur almost exclusively during daytime) and Vagal type LAF (the attacks occur at night, often ending in the morning). Urination occurs during the attack. If the AF leads to decrease in COP (due to loss of atrial kick in patients with compromised cardiac functions); urination decreases.
