I think I may have found a clue as to HMS Australia’s attackers! The Ki 51’s of the JAAF 6th Flying Brigade were active in shipping attacks that day. I haven’t related their bases to Australia’s position or reviewed the documentation on the Australia attack but here’s what I have at the moment. Six 65 FR aircraft flew from San Jose and claim to have set a “transport ship” on fire. Three aircraft failed to return and two or three of the others were damaged with one crewman killed. Three others of the 65th flew from Lipa. Results of mission unknown. One failed to return. Three from 66th FR “set an 8,000 ton transport on fire.” Two aircraft failed to return.
