The area below my kneecap feels sore whenever i play sports that require jumping. What is wrong with it and am I at risk for knee injury?
The area below your kneecap (patella) is the tibial plateu. It’s the part of your leg that is inferior (lower) to your knee joint. The superior (upper) part of the leg is the femur. An Orthopedic surgeon can sometimes detect an injury to your knee by the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, the only true way to see an injury to the knee is by arthroscopic surgery. This procedure allows the surgeon to actually visualize inside of the knee joint. The surgeon can see if your knee is diseased such as arthritis or injured such as an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. A more common diagnosis with younger people experiencing pain may be a meniscus tear. The meniscus functions as a shock absorber when we walk, run and jump. If torn, it is very painful because it gets in between the tibia and femur and binds between the two leg bones. A meniscus tear can be repaired by biting the torn cartilage and shaving it smooth with arthroscopic instruments. Think of it as like a hang nail
