The guidance says that Vincristine must be diluted to a maximum concentration of 0.1mg/ml, but the checklist says the dilution should be 0.1mg/ml. Can we do either?
Answer No. As far as dilution of Vincristine for intravenous use is concerned, the guidance should take precedence over the checklist. The guidance is specific to Vincristine, and states that the Pharmacy should dilute the volume of all Vincristine to a maximum concentration of 0.1 mg/ml and a minimum volume of 10ml. This means that the concentration should be less than or equal to 0.1mg/ml. Thus 1mg Vincristine to be given intravenously must be diluted in at least a volume of 10mls; a dose of 0.9mg would therefore also be diluted to 10ml, not 0.1 mg/ml which would give a final volume less than 10ml; 2mg Vincristine to be given intravenously, must be diluted in at least 20mls This aspect of the guidance applies to all patients over 10 years.
