Your question is not as simple as it seems. There are two MAIN hormones which control sexual characteristics in a male and female (ie. what makes a person male or female) TESTOSTERONE for male; OESTROGEN for female. The DOMINANT (or main) hormone controlling male characteristics ( testicles, sperm production, development of a penis etc) is TESTOSTERONE. However, males also have oesrogen in their bodies, but the amount of testosterone is higher than the amount of oestrogen thus causing testicle and penile growth and sperm production. The DOMINANT (or main) hormone controlling female characterisitics (breast development, menstruation etc) is OESTROGEN. However, females also have testosterone in their bodies, but the amount of oestrogen is higher than the amount of testosterone thus causing breast development. There is a second main hormone in females which controls menstruation. It is called PROGESTERONE. So both males and females have both TESTOSTERONE and OESTROGEN in their bodies. Its
