A. The performance of local water utilities is mixed. Many local water utilities perform well against Department of Water and Energy performance indicators while others do not. All communities serviced by local water utilities should be able to benefit from a secure water supply and expect professionalism, cost effective service standards and regulatory safeguards in the delivery of water supply and sewerage services. The Governments Best-Practice Management of Water Supply and Sewerage Guidelines is the key instrument for driving performance improvement by local water utilities. The level of compliance with the Guidelines is high for the larger local water utilities. Over 85 per cent of utilities with more than 10,000 connected properties comply with the Guidelines. However, the level of compliance for smaller utilities in particular is generally lower. The compliance levels for utilities with less than 1500 connections are 66 per cent for water supply and only 53 per cent for sewerag
