While the sensors are based on the same electronics design, and from first review look very similar, they are programmed differently. The S-8700/S-8800 series sensors have a shorter focal distance and quicker shut off (less than 1/2 second) designed specifically for the dimensions of the low spout lavatory units. The S-8100/S-8200 series focal distance is considerably longer to accommodate the gooseneck and it will allow the water to run for 2 seconds once a user removes their hands. The S-8700 and S-8800 have a 60 second timeout feature on for increased vandal resistance. The timeout feature is extended to 120 seconds of continuous use on the S-8100 and S-8200 series faucets. This extended timeout is because healthcare practitioners on average wash their hands much more thoroughly than do people in restrooms.
