Some insecticides contain pyrethroids as their active ingredient. These are related to the natural substance pyrethrum, which is extracted from the chrysanthemum. They have the great advantage that they act specifically on insects and do not affect (under proper conditions of use) the health of humans, pets and livestock. The pyrethroids have a selective effect on insects’ nervous systems and so can eliminate them. A harmful effect on human health is fundamentally impossible – under proper conditions of use. The same applies to the absorption of the pyrethroids through the skin. If pyrethroids do however get into the body, they are metabolised quickly and completely excreted.
