Canadian citizens 18 years of age or older, who have been residing outside Canada for less than five consecutive years since their last visit home, and who intend to resume residence in Canada, are eligible to have their names added to the National Register of Electors. The five-year time limit does not apply to federal or provincial public servants posted abroad, nor to expatriate employees of international organizations to which Canada belongs and contributes. It also does not apply to the spouses and dependants of these electors residing outside Canada, nor to the spouses and dependants of Canadian Forces personnel residing outside Canada.
