All you need is a British machine readable passport which has 6 months validity still on it, on the day you return back in the UK. If your passport doesn’t have 6 months validity, you can apply to your nearest passport office for a renewed passport, to which they will add the extra months you still have on your current passport onto your new one. If your going for longer than 3 months you’ll need a visa from the American Consulate in London or Belfast.
