Trimox is a brand name for ampicillin. This is a penicillin like drug and is effective for treating sore throats(pharyngitis) due to bacteria called Streptocci-or Strep throat. Antibiotics are given before dental procedures to protect the heart and heart valves against infbction by bacteria dislodged during the cleaning process. These bacteria in general belong to the same family -the Streptocci foamily- and are usually very sensitive to penicillin like drugs.
