United Kingdom: Why do public sector workers in the UK feel they deserve a better pension than private sector workers?

I feel that this issue has been the subject of mass misrepresentation by the Government and the media alike. I doubt that any of the Public Sector workers who went on strike believe they should have better pensions than anyone in any sector of employment, and neither do I believe that they feel they are better than anyone else. Jeremy Clarkson made a ‘throwaway’ comment about having everyone that went out, shot; it was a tongue in cheek reaction to a leading question, just as I’m sure the teacher described above was misquoted. At the end of the day the Coalition want people to work longer, pay a higher percentage into their pensions and yet yield smaller results. In anyone’s book this is unfair. Just making the retirement age higher is going to dramatically alter the average age of the workforce in the next 10 years, they will cost the state and employers more in sick days due to naturally ailing health, and wages than it would to train and employ a young person currently struggling in
