Both of these ingredients belong to the chemical class of aliphatic alcohols, but they are very different from what people typically think of alcohol. Both of these ingredients are actually solids. Lanolin alcohol is a thickening agent and has some emollient properties. Cetyl alcohol is also a thickening agent with emollient properties. Neither of these ingredients dries the skin, but actually help moisturize it.
