HOUSTON, May 18 (Reuters) – Firefighters battled flames at Sunoco Inc’s (SUN.N) oil refinery in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania, on Monday after an explosion late Sunday cut fuel production and triggered a rally in gasoline prices. The blast rocked an ethylene unit at the plant, sparking a fire and forcing the unit shut and other operations to slow. A Sunoco official said no one has been injured in the incident. “The fire is under control and is contained and I don’t know when it will be out and will not speculate on that,” said Sunoco spokesman Thomas Golembeski. “Some production has been shut in,” he said. Gasoline futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange RBc1 rose 4.23 cents to $1.7229 a gallon early Monday, while heating oil HOc1 rose 3.98 cents to $1.4586. Gasoline prices in the New York Harbor cash market, which reflect regional wholesale values, also rose slightly on concern the incident would hit output at the refinery’s gasoline-making fluid catalytic cracker, dealers said.
