Karen’s response: We cannot escape the fact that history was not quite as all-encompassing for the PNEU as it is for many homeschoolers. They were more balanced. You cannot have time for things like picture study, handicrafts, nature notebooks, map work, poetry, etc, if history takes an hour or more a day. So, our history is going to look a bit “skimpy” next to Sonlight, Beautiful Feet, Truthquest, Greenleaf, etc… That’s not a bad thing altogether–fewer books read and narrated thoroughly are better than dozens gobbled up for the sake of the story and no more. I know that a plan of 3 four-year history cycles is popular, but trying to get through world history that fast is a break-neck pace that doesn’t allow for time to think deeply. Charlotte Mason did not approach history this way. You would never find a PNEU student reading from the ancients to WWII twice within a five-year span.
