This is a fairly subjective topic; both regarding fame, artistic fame, art, and history itself. Picasso is indeed famous and well known. Henry Rousseau is not well known outside of art circles and art history classes perhaps. The difference between the two is that Henry Rousseau came from a time when ‘official’ art did not sanction styles outside of neoclassicism (which was sanctioned by the official academies in western society). It was the impressionists that brought about the concept of the Salon (Salon of the Refused) in the decade before Henry Rousseau and the post-impressionists made their mark in art history. The post-impressionists had the Salon of Independents, which did have sanctioning from the Ministry of Arts, but it was still outside of the academic world of art.
