Was India the richest country in the world until the British annexed it?
India was very wealthy before the British Trading Company gained control. Some people say that the British taxed heavily, others say that they simply oversaw the trade industry and left most of the governing to the original government officials. Either way, for almost two hundred years, India experienced cruel trade tactics, such as famine when food exports were increasing, or a sharp decline in domestic industry for favor of exporting unfinished goods and materials, making cloth and home goods hard to come by. Any profits were monopolized by the foreign ruler. When the British finally left in 1947, India had much to recover with little means to do so.
