ladyvols1 Teacher High School – 9th Grade eNotes Editor Not only was Levi Coffin a part of the Underground railroad, he was an important abolitionist and a leader of the Underground railroad. Mr. Coffin, a store owner and successful business man helped so many slaves escape and was so instrumental in the anti-slave movement he was known as the “President of the Underground Railroad.” Coffin, even though he was born in the south, was a Quaker and very aware of the unfairness of slavery. He spent his life fighting for the freedom of the slaves and to stop the transport and selling of human beings for profit. His wife, Catherine, and he were very successful in their work. His home is now a protected state historic site.
