The Russell Crowe character is a fictional character and not based on the real life Maximus. The only similarity to real life people are in the names . The Maximus in the film is an idealised representation of the simple man becoming a hero and defeating tyranny. Commodus actually died 140 years before Maximus was born and the manner in which Commodus met his death is rather entertaining. His sister, Lucilla plotted with the senate to assassinate him and when the plot was uncovered Commodus had her executed. Not ones to give up so easily the senate had his favourite concubine poison him and then he was strangled by his trainer whose name was Narcissus. The film is accurate in many areas, Commodus fought in the arena 73 times and won every fight. This is not because he was a brilliant swordsman but down to the fact that his opponents had leaden swords.
