It is up to Lord Meren, the Eyes and Ears of the Pharaoh, to determine this, and if she was, to find her murderer. However, it is now years after her death, and many of the witnesses and potential witnesses are themselves dead, perhaps murdered as well. In this book the characters of Queen Nefertiti and her fanatic husband, Pharaoh Akhenaten, are introduced. This does little to move the plot forward, but does add more background, engenders sympathy for the primary murder victim, and adds another suspect for the role of First Murderer. As the indomitable Meren continues his search for the killer of the beautiful queen, he is beset on all sides by a shadowy figure, who may or may not actually be the queens killer, but who continues to execute informants and suspects with abandon, endangers Merens family, and frames Meren himself for a heinous crime, forcing him to flee for his life.
