The British built a new capital called New Delhi. A lot of universities were established under the Raj. (However, again, they tried to eradicate native culture by using Westernized education systems) Negative: The Europeans were very culturally insensitive, issues such as the animal fats (of cows and pigs forbidden by both Hinduism and Islam) used to grease bullet cartridges lead to the First War of Independance in 1857. There was fierce competition for India. During the Seven Years War and Carnatic Wars, many thousands died including many, many civilians. The scars of this fighting are still visible as farmers in South India are still unearthing bullets and cannonballs.
