Was rial by jury a fair system before the late 1800s?

Trial by jury was never a fair system…In England, trial by jury meant something very different from what it means now…back then, juries were chosen by picking people who know something about the defendant or about the case. They decided based on evidence and their own personal knowledge….today, juries are supposed to be totally neutral and decide based only on evidence presented in court.
