The Bush administration wanted abstinence-only sex education so badly that they tied federal funding to the existence of such programs in public schools. They didn’t care if the programs worked or not – they endorsed these programs because of their consistency with a religious ideology, not because of any evidence of effectiveness. Fortunately the Obama administration is ending all this, but the push for abstinence-only sex education has not ended and isn’t going away. What’s your opinion about it? The fact that abstinence eduction doesn’t much work may explain why it is defended first and foremost by religious groups — after all, they are far more heavily invested with taking things on faith rather than evidence to begin with. There is also the fact that, at least for some in the abstinence-only camp, the results simply don’t matter: they would follow the same course even if it didn’t reduce the rates of sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy.
