It wasn’t a religious movement. The thought was that if everybody shared what they had, took no more than they needed, did what was right and loved one another the world would be a better place.

I would say they were “spiritual” rather than religious. Religion to a hippy would be interpreted as “an organized, institutional entity related to the establishment.
