Were lots of albums released on MiniDisc?
Not in Australia. Sony predictably led the charge in terms of released commercial albums on MD format, although charge is perhaps a bit of an overstatement. Outside Asia, MD Music never really caught on and only a limited number of albums were released in the format. Then again, advertising like this probably didn’t help. We’re not sure what the ad executives were thinking, frankly. Was MiniDisc only good for audio? While initially an audio-centric format, later MiniDisc models supporting two different data formats for MiniDisc. The first, MD Data, was something of a flop. While it could compete with the emerging CD-R standard in terms of data storage, MD Data required specific MD Data compatible MiniDiscs, which were incompatible with audio MiniDiscs. The later Hi-MD format eschewed this limitation, allowing for hybrid audio and data to be stored on a single standard disc, although custom 1GB Hi-MD discs were also available.
