I think the feeling was that Bobby had lost the dressing room and he was getting on in years. I think part of the problem was that Bobby himself seemed to think he could go on forever and the Newcastle board knew that at some point they’d have to take the decision to bring in someone younger, with fresh ideas. Unfortunately they brought in Souness. That’s their real mistake. When they did choose to get rid of Bobby it didn’t really seem comepletely justified in terms of results so at the time I thought it was pretty unfair on him. I guess it had to happen sometime though – he was in his 70s.
