What’s the best material for drumsticks?

The quality of your drumsticks is so important. I’ve seen so many beginner drummers give up because they think they’re not making progress. They put this down to a lack of talent, but often it’s the equipment that lets them down. Most commonly, drumsticks will be made of wood, such as oak or maple. There are many debates about which wood is best.

If wooden drumsticks aren’t working for you, though, you could opt for plastic ones or a pair made of carbon fiber or aluminum. These tend to be more durable and give you more rebound. In my opinion, though, the material isn’t as important as size and weight. The difference between 5a vs 7a drumsticks is bigger than wood vs plastic. Find the sticks that feel right in your hand, regardless of what they’re made of.
