What adaptations do golden lion tamarins have to protect themselves?
Answer Dear Jessica, All tamarins are pretty vulnerable animals, being very small and lacking any good weapons such as sharp teeth or claws. So their primary defense is being very vigilant and living in social groups where all members contribute to the constant sentry duty. Many eyes are better than one pair, and tamarins escape predation primarily be seeing the predator before it sees them, and fleeing rapidly into the dense foliage where they are harder to catch. I’m not sure about tamarins, but many arboreal primates have learned to recognize the warning calls of other species, such as birds and deer browsing below, to help them detect predators that they might not otherwise see on their own. Hope that helps.
