What age do babies roll over?

My son first rolled over at 7 weeks. Mind you he can only roll from his stomach to his back, and not from his back to his stomach. My son just rolled over spontaneously whilst he was trying look at a musical toy i had put by the side of his head. I think the best way to encourage a baby to roll from their stomachs to backs is to give them lots of tummy time so they can strengthen their arm and neck muscles. I think most babies learn to roll from the front to back before they learn to roll from back to front and i think the average age babies learn to roll over is at around 3-5 months old.

There was just a question about this a few minutes ago, but yours has a couple of different pieces so here goes….rolling over usually occurs between 3 and 5 months. Typically babies will figure out how to roll from belly to back first and then back to belly later. Back to belly is much harder for most babies. If your baby is a pretty content baby that doesn’t mind just “hanging out” he may not be motivated to roll over one way or the other. It is definitely nothing to worry about but if you find a toy that he is interested in put it out to the side of him while he is on his back and see if he tries to roll toward it. Just encourage him for any movements that he makes on his own that you think are intentional, it will help reinforce the behavior and he will probably try to do it again. The rolling over will be in his own time though, when he is ready he will work hard at it and he will be able to roll all over the place, just wait!!
