What are Anaconda Snakes?
Anaconda snakes are the largest constrictor reptiles found in the Americas. These surreptitious, strong, sleek animals kill their prey by squeezing them to death along swampy rivers of the Amazon and Orinoco Basins. Although it is rare, Eunectes murinus are wide and strong enough to swallow a person whole. We find anaconda snakes, or water boas, in Brazil, Guiana, and across South American jungles. Even though they are capable swimmers in fast currents, anaconda snakes prefer marshy or stagnant river areas. During the day, they’ll sun themselves by curling up in branches that overhang the river. Nocturnal hunters, after nightfall they hide in the leafy underbrush to wait for unsuspecting animals to come for a drink.
