Saguaro cactus, where to start.. Saguaro is a CAM plant (Crassulacean acid metabolism), in CAM plants the initial carbon assimilation step is seperated temporarily from the calvin cycle. Read up on c3, c4 and CAM plants to understand more. Saguaro has succulent tissues, Saguaro has thorns and spines which relfect more incident solar radiation and create a layer of “dead air” close to the plant; thorns decrease wind velocity over a plant’s stem or leaves, so wind dessication is lessened.
