What are black truffles?
The Black Truffle is the most expensive food item in the world. They are more valuable than pure silver, and wholesale for more than $500 per pound. They are a fungus or mushroom with incredible flavor. They grow in the ground on the roots for various woody plants such as Hazels. Specially trained animals such as dogs or pigs find the buried truffles using their keen sense of smell. Garland Truffles sells Hazel seedlings whose roots are inoculated with the Black Truffle spores. According to Garland, a field of their Hazels will begin Truffle production in seven years, producing about 75 pounds of truffles per year per acre.
