What are burial vaults and grave liners?
These are the outside containers into which the casket is placed. Burial vaults are designed to protect the casket, and may be made of a variety or combination of materials including concrete, stainless steel, galvanized steel, copper, bronze, plastic, or fiberglass. A grave liner is a lightweight version of a vault, which simply keeps the grave surface from sinking in.
To facilitate beautification and maintenance of cemetery grounds, most cemeteries in the Greater Edmonton area require that the casket be placed in an outer burial receptacle capable of withstanding the weight and pressures of the earth above and surrounding the casket. The basic option is a “grave liner” – a simple cement box with a lid that is placed on top after the casket is resting inside. Note: a grave liner is not a sealed unit – and offers no guarantee that outside grave elements may or may not enter the liner. A Burial vault is designed not only to withstand the weight of the surrounding earth, but also they offer additional protection to the casket from all graveside elements (i.e. water). A burial vault may be made from a combination of materials including concrete, stainless steel, galvanized steel, copper, bronze, plastic or fiberglass. Note: Burial vaults are sealed units.
