What Are Chemical Peel and Dermabrasion?

0

Chemical Peel and Dermabrasion are procedures designed to refresh the appearance of your skin. A Chemical Peel aims to produce an exfoliation of the outer layers of the skin while a Dermabrasion utilises a technique similar to “sandpapering”. The skin removed can be superficial or deep. The more superficial techniques usually aim at giving the skin a “fresh, clean” look. However, they will not remove the wrinkles. The deeper methods may try to remove wrinkles, such as those around the lips. The deeper the technique, the greater is the chance for complications such as altered pigmentation of the skin and scarring. You should discuss with your surgeon what you hope to achieve by these techniques so that he or she may determine which technique is best suited to your requirements. Are these methods alternatives to a Facelift?

Chemical peel (chemosurgery) and dermabrasion are two alternate methods of achieving the same desired result – restoration of wrinkled, scarred or blemished skin to a more youthful appearance. One involves application of a chemical solution to, in effect, peel away the top layers of skin; the other utilizes a mechanical procedure to abrade or sand the top layers of skin. Both techniques lead to a new skin surface. In both procedures, usually, a pink, tighter, smoother skin will emerge, relatively free of blemishes and wrinkles in the area treated. In the initial period after the procedure, because of some swelling and a puffing out of the fine lines and wrinkles, the results may be more dramatic than is the case when the final healing process is completed. At that time, fine lines may reappear as the swelling subsides, but they will not be as prominent as before the procedure.

Chemical peel/dermabrasions are procedures that will abrade or eliminate the superficial layers of skin and thus, will produce a regeneration of dermico-efder and corneal layer that will make the skin plumper and less wrinkled. This will also help with dyschromias and little changes in the pigmentation of the skin. This is done as an outpatient procedure. It will take two to three weeks, depending on the depth of the peel and the desired results, to complete the healing process.
