What are CITES Appendices?
CITES Appendix I includes those species threatened with extinction and that have been or may be affected by international commercial trade. Appendix I species may not be traded internationally for primarily commercial purposes. Such species may be exported and imported for non-commercial purposes. CITES Appendix II includes species that are not necessarily threatened with extinction, but may become so unless trade is closely controlled and monitored to avoid unsustainable removal from the wild to degree that it adversely impacts its survival. A species may also be listed on Appendix I or II if the species is so indistinguishable that it can be classified as a look-alike. CITES Appendix III includes those species that any Party has identified as being subject to regulation of exploitation within its jurisdiction and as needing the cooperation of other Parties to monitor international trade in the species.
