• COPMS are exams which are given at the end of the program. Graduate students must take a comprehensive examination that reflects the full range of their program. The design of the comprehensive examination must show a relationship to the program and to the program’s exit seminar. It is based upon the student’s major area(s) of study, as well as related areas, and may include work done on a thesis. Students must give evidence that they can integrate information and ideas from the various areas in which they have studied. The examination may be written and/or oral, as determined by the student’s department. In order to be eligible for a comprehensive examination, the student should have completed all of the necessary course work specified by the major department. A student who plans to take the comprehensive examination should file the graduate office form entitled Examination Request, together with a nonrefundable comprehensive examination fee of $60 for master’s degree candidates. What Are Comps?The term “Comp” is an abbreviation for the word “complimentary.” The expression originated among traditional land-based gambling casinos as a means for these establishments to express their appreciation to players for their patronage. They help the client and the designer to determine if they are “on the same wavelength”. At this “comping” stage of the project, the general concepts and looks are discussed and determined. Comping” is the most flexible and creative time in project development. The direction of the design can be modified and changed relatively easily during the comping stage. Reviewing the comps, no details should be paid attention to. Once both parties agree on a design, a look and a feel, the designer takes the comp to a next level where specific types, text, compositions, colors, illustrations, photos, etc. are determined, and the work procedes towards the final execution of these decisions.
