Most commonly when shoe manufacturers are talking about cushioning, they talk about providing cushioning under the foot. The type of cushioning ranges from heel cushions to metatarsal cushions. Some shoes even provide cushioning against the upper of the shoe to protect the foot as it twists inside the shoe when you walk. Cushioning is implemented with foam materials, liquid or air. Some shoes even duct the liquid from one region underneath the foot to another. Much of this cushioning is questionable beyond marketing appeal and product differentiation.  more
