What are Decision Support Systems?
Decision Support Systems was a term used regualrly back in the 80s, but seen less often now. It was a broad term, open to much interpretation but most often seemed to involve the kind of reporting and analysis tools that, today, would be referred to as business intelligence. Around the same time the term Exectuvie Information System was often used almost interchangeably. In both cases the terms were open to abuse, with some software vendors calling their reporting environment a DSS or an EIS if it contained any visual representation like a pie chart. Wikipedia has some good material on the topic.
