What are Dermabrasion and Micro-Dermabrasion?
Dermabrasion is the surgical process by which the skin is resurfaced by planing or sanding, usually by means of a rapidly rotating abrasive tool such as a wire brush, diamond fraise, or serrated wheel. Micro-Dermabrasion is the use of machines to grind the skin. Aluminum oxide crystals are blown across the skin to erode the skin to the most preferred surface. The process is very similar to sand blasting. The problems with either method include, but not limited to, exposure to aluminum a substance linked to Alzheimer’s, aluminum dust particles on clothes and in hair, no benefit other than temporarily smoothing the skin, possible cross-contamination due to loss of pressure or contact with tubes, clotting disorders or bleeding, herpes simplex or other infections, hypertrophic or keloidal scarring, adverse reaction to medications, cold intolerance, lupus erythematosus, immunosuppression, koebnerizing conditions.
