What are electronic NLIS (Sheep) tags?

0

Electronic NLIS (Sheep) tags supplied by DPI contain a half duplex microchip which is encoded with a unique, unalterable individual number. The electronic (Sheep) tags have no power source themselves but have a coil of copper wire inside which acts as the antenna. This inbuilt antenna captures the power source provided by scanning equipment and allows the microchip to be accurately read in a fraction of a second using a suitable reader. This technology is recognised as clearly the best technology available for the identification of livestock. Readers used to scan NLIS (Cattle) tags can be used to scan the electronic NLIS (Sheep) tags supplied by DPI. A unique number, known as the NLIS number, is also printed on the outside of each electronic NLIS (Sheep) tag. This number is known as the NLIS number and is different from the microchip number and can be read visually.
