What are five good reasons for going against democracy in ancient athens?
Five important distinctions between Athenian democracy and democracy in America today which makes the former very flawed: Athenian democracy excluded all women. Athenian democracy allowed for slavery to exist and gave slave no say. Athenian democracy did not protect the rights of the disenfranchised, such as that it allowed for pedophilia to run rampant and unchecked. There were no provisions to limit the scope of government control, allowing what the founding fathers called a tyranny of the majority; harsh sentences could be prescribed for petty crimes. Requirements for property owning were such that what was called democrcy was in fact a mere ologarchy, for the bulk of the population was ineligible to vote. Hence the notion of government by consensus was a farce, and the consent of the governed was not a true founding principle. There’s certainly some overlap, but that’s what I see most clearly, and I would argue them as distinct points due to the fact that the causes or consequences
