You must be in zone 4-6 in New York. Perennials are plants that grow year round, but they won’t have continuous flowers. If she likes sun/shade plants, hydrangeas are blue; also, purple echinacea is nice for full sun and it has some hybrid relatives in yellow or orange these days. Butterfly bushes comes in blueish purple and they are gorgeous. Your local garden center will have a wonderful selection of perennials for your zone and you can pick one out first hand… it’s always more memorable to get a plant from someone who chose it especially for you!
