What are Food Deserts?
Food Deserts are defined, in our report, as areas where there exists a lack of geographical, income and cultural access to food. That is, within food deserts, there is a lack of physical access to healthy food options, lack of money and time to purchase or cook healthy food, and a lack of cultural and taste preferences that limit healthy food intake. All of these factors present a significant public health problem as poor food choices are linked to diseases such as cardiovascular disease and obesity.
