What Are Funny Cars?
In the early 60’s Detroit was heavily involved in drag racing and because of this a class called Factory Experimental developed from the cars built specificaly for racing the 1/4 mile by Chrysler,Ford etc.At first these FX cars looked just like the showroom models then they began to move the axles forward and the engines back to help weight transfer,starting out with 2% movement of the axles cars soon went to extremes these AWB (altered wheelbase) cars moved the rear axle to just clear the door opening and located the front axle under the front bumper,these wild ill handling cars looked strange,odd,funny to the spectators who quickly grew to love them,these ‘funny’ looking cars soon became known as Funny cars and the name stuck despite their only being around for a couple of years.They were essentially saloons with unlimited modifications and as they began to build tube chassis and add fiberglass bodies the name stayed with them,by the close of the 60’s ‘funnycar’ became a racing class
