What are hash marks on a police uniform stand for?

A hash mark is given for completing a certain number of years of police service. The number of years per mark varies from one department to the next. My agency issues a new hash mark for every four years of service (5 hash marks = 20 years of service). Other standards are one mark per five years and one mark per three years. more
