What are independent and dependent variables in an experiment?

The independent variables are those that you choose or regulate, the other variables that you are measuring (and depend on these) are the dependent variables. Although I’m not sure about the precise setup of your assignment, it seems to me that temperature, sizes of the cups, drop size etc are the independent variables and that “diffussion to the edge” time is the dependent variable.
