ISO 14000 is a group of voluntary international standards addressing EMSs, environmental auditing, environmental labeling, environmental performance evaluation, and life cycle assessment. The standards were developed by the International Organization for Standardization and are commonly referred to as the ISO 14000 series. The series provides an organization with a systematic approach to environmental management. ISO 14001 is an International Environmental Management Systems standard. This document is often referred to as “the standard” and specifies requirements to develop and implement an EMS. The Army adopted the ISO 14001 model because it is a global standard that will help the Army meet its global mission. It will also allow the Army to align with industry best management practices, and provides a common framework by which all Army programs can be structured.
